Modus is a local-first app. The short version is: your CRM data stays on your Mac. The long version is below.
What Modus stores about you
Nothing on our servers, because we don't run any. All of your contacts, deals, invoices, notes, email metadata, and time logs live in a SQLite database on your Mac, in your user library. Modus reads and writes that file directly. No copy is made to a backend we control.
iCloud sync (optional)
If you turn on iCloud sync, your data is copied between your own Apple devices through Apple's end-to-end-encrypted private CloudKit. We never see this data. Apple manages the keys; we have no read access. Turning sync off keeps everything strictly on the current Mac.
Crash reporting (opt-in, off by default)
Modus can send anonymous crash reports to Sentry to help us fix crashes you experience. This is opt-in — the toggle lives in Settings → Privacy and ships disabled. When enabled, we send: symbolicated stack traces, the Modus version, your macOS version, and your Mac model family. We never send: contact names, deal titles, invoice numbers, notes, email content, API keys, or any user identifier. The scrubbing rules are enforced in app code, not just policy — see the open-source-style detail in our documentation.
Email and calendar accounts you connect
When you connect Gmail, Outlook, iCloud Mail, an IMAP account, or your Apple Calendar, Modus accesses those services directly from your Mac. Credentials are stored in your Mac's Keychain. Message bodies and event details never leave your Mac. Modus does not have a server proxying any of these connections.
AI assistant
The on-device assistant uses Apple's Foundation Models when available, so prompts and your data stay on your Mac. If you choose to bring your own key (BYOK) for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or a local Ollama server, those prompts are sent directly from your Mac to the provider you selected. We do not proxy or log them.
Purchases and licensing
Purchases happen through the Mac App Store. Apple handles payments, receipts, refunds, and entitlement verification. We don't see your name, email, or payment details — only an anonymous purchase entitlement bound to your Apple ID.
Your rights
Because we don't store your data on a server, the standard data-subject rights mostly translate to local actions: delete the app to remove the database, or use the in-app Export to take your data with you. If you ever do email us at hello@getmodus.xyz, the email itself is the only thing we know about you, and we keep it only as long as needed to reply.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change in a meaningful way we'll update this page and note the date at the top. We don't consider adding a new optional integration a meaningful change; we do consider adding any new place data leaves your Mac a meaningful change.
